Gwen has seven years of experience in both D.C. and Virginia public school classrooms, where she taught English Language Arts (ELA) and English for Speakers of other Languages (ESL). She founded Tutor Ring in 2012 to help students develop skills in literacy, writing, and language acquisition.

Tutor Ring
Lead Tutor, ELA and ESL

  • Provide tutoring in English, literature, creative writing, history, and drama; typical sessions are 60-90 minutes, in-home or at an intermediate location.
  • Offer test preparation assistance for Virginia SOLs, SAT, PSAT, and SHSAT (“TJ Test”).
  • Clients include elementary, middle, and high school students as well as adults, with some work in classroom settings providing ELA/ESL lessons for up to 12 students.
  • Teach small-group classes (3-12 students); design curricula and materials and identify level-appropriate reading.

LADO International Institute, 2018-Present
  • ESL Instructor - Teach English language skills across ability levels using both provided and original lesson plans.  Developed an original curriculum to prepare non-native English speakers for the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).

Fairfax County Public Schools, 2013-2016
  • Mount Vernon HS - Teacher of record for ESL Levels 1-2, Levels 3-4; collaborative ESL support for English 11 and Fast Math.  Supplemental instructor/proctor for WIDA and Summer Language Lab.
  • Homebound Program - Outreach teacher for English and Civics.
